We are in need of donations for the Silent Auction that is held at the Synod Banquet Dinner on Friday evening, June 15. The deadline for donating is tomorrow, May 21st. Please see Jerry Bates if you have an item you would like to donate or if you wish to donate money towards the purchase of some items.

SYNOD VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We need volunteers to greet guests at an information booth at the Atrium Suites Hotel; to provide rides on Saturday June 16 to and from Mass at St. George, and to help set up and cleaning after the Synod brunch. A letter outlining the schedule of events will be mailed to you this week.

Mass for the Feast of the Ascension
God is gone up with a merry noise, and the Lord with the sound of the trump.
Sing praises, sing praises unto our God;
Sing praises, sing praises unto our King.

Psalm 47

Days of obligation are an integral part of the history and life of our Church. The title itself originally indicated that members of the Catholic and Apostolic Church were obligated to observe the particular feast day in the same manner as Sunday – they were to attend Mass and refrain from unnecessary work. The special designation was needed because of the holy days that changed their day of the week to comply with the required number of days and the calendar. Throughout the Middle Ages, there were many Days of Obligation, so many that in the 17th century, the Church limited them to 36. At the end of World War I, largely because of the different dates between religious and civil holidays, the Days of Obligation in the Western Church were officially reduced to ten each year. Since then, individual changes and reductions have been made in some countries, including our own. Eastern churches have different Days of Obligations, and generally have more than we do.

The Feast of Ascension, “Ascension Day,” originated in ancient times. St. Augustine wrote that it is of Apostolic origin and suggests that it was observed generally in the Church long before his time. My recollection of it goes back to elementary school days. We arrived at school, had roll call, and then in close lines of two were marched over to the church where we sang matins (I can still hear the glorious, “Hail the day that sees him rise!”), after which we silently filed out of the church and were dismissed for the day. At that point each year, I rushed off to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal where I spent the morning fishing for gudgeon with a jam jar, string and lots of stale bread, and then, a rare treat, spent the entire afternoon in church blowing dust out of the organ.

We employ the rich Ceremonial of the historic Church in our worship. While it may seem a bit strange or unnatural to you at first, be patient. The liturgical heritage of the Church WILL speak to you in time, as it has to Christians through the centuries.

Welcome to Saint George’s!

If you are a visitor with us just for today we bid you God speed on your journey. If you are seeking a church home we welcome you into our spiritual family so that you might make good on your Christian duty to “follow Christ, worship God every Sunday in His Church, to work and pray and give for the spread of His kingdom” (BCP, page 291). In either case, be sure to sign the guest book and introduce yourself to us upon the conclusion of the service.

We are part of the Anglican Province of Christ the King–a nationwide body of traditional Anglican Churches which stands for historic Christianity in the Anglican tradition.

OUR BELIEFS are based on the teaching of the Bible and the ancient creeds of the Church. We use the 1928 Book of Common Prayer as the basis for our worship.

OUR MISSION is to worship God, serve Jesus Christ, and to bring mankind to Jesus and His Church by : (1) proclaiming biblical truth through Catholic order as it is embodied in the historic Book of Common Prayer; (2) preaching God’s Word and administrating His Holy Sacraments; (3) showing the love of Christ by reaching out to others through works of charity; and (4) upholding Christian family values and teaching the Christian faith and New Testament morality to our children.

OUR GOALS are: to grow in understanding of and participation in the corporate worship services of the Church, to reach Holy Scripture daily and to love God and our neighbor more fully.

FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN are especially welcomed, as our Church School stands ready to equip you and your children for living the Christian life. Sunday school instruction and nursery are provided during the 10:30 am Sunday service.
