GOSPEL FOR TRINITY XXIII SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Matthew 22:15-22This Gospel tells again of an attempt to trap Jesus. The question He was asked, ‘Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?’, was a subtle, far reaching one. It involved the widespread resentment among religious and patriotic Jews at having to pay taxes to the Imperial Roman government, the pagan power which had subjugated them. Jesus made the questioners answer their own question by producing the tribute-money, the Roman silver coin bearing the Emperor’s image and name, with which the Jews paid the poll-tax imposed upon them by the Romans since AD 6. The coin represented the government that issued it. It represented therefore, the maintenance of law and order, the safeguarding of life, the administration of justice, the protection of trade and travel. If the Jews accepted these and benefitted from them, then they were under a moral obligation to pay for what they had obtained. At the same time, He insisted that there were the things of God equally binding upon citizens. The early Christians recognized this twofold obedience required of them. They sought to be good citizens but they knew that in the end as Peter said, ‘We must obey God rather than men’. L. W.
