THE ASCENSION DAY

May 1, 2008 A.D.

ASCENSION DAY

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. Mark 16:19

Ascension Day, known as Holy Thursday in old English usage, is kept on the fifth Thursday, which is the fortieth day, after Easter. It is one of the great festivals of the Christian year, and there is considerable evidence for its observance from the later years of the fourth century. St. Augustine speaks of it as universally observed and thought it was of very early origin - ‘For those things which are received and observed over all the world, not as written in Scripture, but as handed down to us by tradition, we conceive to be instituted by the Apostles themselves or some numerous Council whose authority is of very great use in the Church. Such are the anniversary solemnities of our Saviour’s passion and resurrection and ascension into heaven, and the coming of the Holy Ghost from heaven.’

The earliest celebration of Ascension Day seems to have originated in Jerusalem, when visiting pilgrims made a procession on this day in memory of the journey made by the Apostles from Jerusalem to Bethany and the Mount of Olives in continuation of the dramatic representations of Holy Week. In the Western Church, the paschal candle, which is lighted during the more important services of Eastertide, is extinguished after the Gospel at the Mass on Ascension Day in commemoration of Christ’s departure from the Apostles.

We employ the rich Ceremonial of the historic Church in our worship. While it may seem a bit strange or

unnatural to you at first, be patient. The liturgical heritage of the Church WILL speak to you in time, as

it has to Christians through the centuries.

Welcome to Saint George’s_

If you are a visitor with us just for today we bid you God speed on your journey. If you are seeking a church home

we welcome you into our spiritual family so that you might make good on your Christian duty to “follow Christ,

worship God every Sunday in His Church, to work and pray and give for the spread of His kingdom” (BCP, page

291). In either case, be sure to sign the guest book and introduce yourself to us upon the conclusion of the service.

We are part of the Anglican Province of Christ the King–a nationwide body of traditional Episcopal Churches

which stands for historic Christianity in the Anglican tradition.

OUR BELIEFS are based on the teaching of the Bible and the ancient creeds of the Church. We use the 1928

Book of Common Prayer as the basis for our worship.

OUR MISSION is to worship God, serve Jesus Christ, and to bring mankind to Jesus and His Church by : (1)

proclaiming biblical truth through Catholic order as it is embodied in the historic Book of Common Prayer; (2)

preaching God’s Word and administrating His Holy Sacraments; (3) showing the love of Christ by reaching out to

others through works of charity; and (4) upholding Christian family values and teaching the Christian faith and New

Testament morality to our children.

OUR GOALS are: to grow in understanding of and participation in the corporate worship services of the Church,

to read Holy Scripture daily and to love God and our neighbor more fully.

FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN are especially welcomed, as our Church School stands ready to equip you and

your children for living the Christian life. Sunday school instruction and nursery are provided during the 10:30 am

Sunday service.
