Jesus said unto them, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM. Then took they
up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
St. John
viii:46
During these last two weeks of
Lent, which form the season of Passiontide, all crucifixes, pictures, and
images in church are covered with purple drapery. The practice is said to refer
to the last words of the gospel, ‘Jesus hid himself and went out of the
temple’. The practice symbolizes the growing pull of events, as Lent’s links
with the Temptation of Christ give way to the story of His death and
Resurrection. With the beginning of Passiontide we start to look towards the
Cross.
