MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR

We Anglicans have in The Book of Common Prayer an elegant and enduring liturgy as well as other tools which enable us to participate in the Faith and Practice of the most devout followers of Christ for the past two thousand years. Many churches have abandoned that historic way of worship and, as a consequence, have departed from the substance of that Faith.

The Dean of our seminary and one of the top New Testament scholars in the country, Fr. Paul Russell, has said one vitally interesting thing about the Early Church was that the Apostles really taught the Faith, and when charlatans showed up in the church and tried to divert the people from the truth of the Gospel, the people quickly rejected them and sent them away.

Being learned in the Gospels, the Epistles, and in the traditions of the Early Church is the best way to distinguish Jesus' true identity from recent "popular depictions." The former Archbishop of the Province of Christ the King, Robert Morse, has often remarked, "If we do not know Jesus of the Scriptures, we meet a stranger in the Mass."

Many who are looking for the love of God will come among us. For them to enter into the liturgy who have no knowledge or experience of it is doubly difficult and can result in their being put off because they don't know what is happening at the altar.

To teach our visitors why we do what we do is one of our great challenges as Anglicans. Many come from a modern background or are just beginning their Christian walk. If we are unlearned ourselves, we cannot spread to others what we only partly know.

We must become a genuine worshipping family. We must share with others the love and compassion of our Blessed Lord by bringing them into our worshipping family, introducing them to what we know, both by example and through the resources now being made available to us and, through us, to them.

Soon we shall have a manual to read ourselves and to put into the hands of visitors, other inquirers, and newly baptized or confirmed Anglicans that will introduce them to the majesty and awe inherent in the Anglican Mass and available to them as they participate in the Sacred Mysteries.

We are working on this and other ways to teach the Faith, and in the next newsletter issue we will highlight yet another tool that should be quite beneficial to both visitor and church member. We press on!

Faithfully in Christ,

Fr. Hines+

Mt. Charleston Hike

Father Hines led a hike on Sunday, September, 18th with thirty-five parishioners and friends of the parish. The Fletcher Canyon Trail was approximately 3 miles round trip and a lovely water fall rewarded us at the summit. An excellent hot lunch was provided by Marlin and Janis Patridge prior to the hike. What a great way to get out of the Las Vegas heat for a few hours and to be refreshed by the beauty of God's creation.

St. George's Anglican Church Michaelmas

Michaelmas will be offered on Thursday, September 29, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. Please join us for this service followed by a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception.

In many scriptural references, angels are closely associated with music by mention of their playing instruments or singing. It is thus highly appropriate that on this day dedicated not only to the great archangel Michael, but to all angels, our service should include clear reference to the music of angels.

St. Michael is mentioned several times in the Old Testament in the Book of Daniel, where he is described as the guardian of the Israelites, "the prince which standeth for the people" in opposition to the prince-angels of Persia and of Greece. In the New Testament he is represented in the Epistle of St. Jude as disputing with the devil over the body of Moses and in the Book of Revelation as fighting in heaven against the dragon, "him that is called the devil and Satan."

The observance of this day originated in the dedication festival of a Basilica of St. Michael in Rome. In the early seventeenth century, Pope Paul V instituted the festival of the Guardian Angels on 2 October. At the revision of the English Prayer Book in 1662, this day was renamed "St. Michael and All Angels."

St. George Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the First Mass Held In Our New Building
On October 12, 2001, Father Hines celebrated the first Mass in our new building. Prior to that date, our congregation met in the lunchroom of McMillan Elementary School (and before that we rented from various churches or met in parish family homes). To celebrate this important event in the life of St. George's and remember our first Sr. Warden Edwin Bowes, we will offer an augmented coffee hour on the patio after 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday October 23rd.

Mark your calendars! The Festival of Lessons and Carols has been scheduled for Sunday, December 18, 2011. This is a wonderful way to celebrate the Nativity of Our Lord. Please spread the word to family, friends, and neighbors. Signup sheets will be made available by the festival committee for donations of food and help with decorations, as we need assistance from parishioners to make this a great community event!

Ken Princen Baptism

On Sunday, September 11th, new member Ken Princen was baptized at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. He is presently enrolled in the adult Confirmation class and has become an active member of the parish. He is grateful God led him to St. George's and values being part of a warm and friendly parish family.

Deacon Bill Recher and Family Relocating To North Carolina

Sunday, October 2nd, will be Deacon Bill Recher's last Sunday among us. We are sorry to see him go but we offer great thanks to Almighty God that he has recently secured employment. Unfortunately, with the high construction unemployment in Nevada, he has had to find work out of state. He and his wife, Heidi, and their children, will be residing in North Carolina. We are grateful for the time he and his family have been among us. He recently commented that his serving at the Altar, ministering to the needs of parishioners and studying with Fr. Hines and Fr. Greer has been a fantastic experience. We pray God will continue to bless his ministry. He will be greatly missed. If you would like to stay in touch with Deacon Recher, his email address is brecher225@gmail.com.

A Note of Thanks from Choir Secretary Carol Dierick

Dear All,

I greatly appreciate your wonderful and generous gift of the earrings which I shall wear often as a reminder of you and our wonderful worship at St. George's!

It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as Choir Secretary, and to get to know each of you.

I could not have fulfilled this role without the unfailing guidance of John Riley, who laid the foundation of our Anglican musical worship in all details great and small with fervor and humor.

We are fortunate to have Judith and Carolyn giving us their care and attention, plus all who contribute to keep this faithful group going. My sincere thanks to each of you.

Fondly,

Carol Dierick

Senior Warden's Report

The vestry has been very busy this year. Not the least of our effort has been focused on changes to the Vestry membership. Jeff Field, who was treasurer, accepted a job out of state and therefore had to resign his position. Fortunately, Laura Seibert accepted a one year term as Jeff's replacement. I want to extend a special thanks to Laura as she has just completed a three year term as a Vestry secretary and member.

Jerry Parsons came on board this year as a new member. He replaced Dave Davis who had just completed his three year term as Junior Warden. Before he got settled he had a family emergency and had to move to California so we lost Jerry. Current member Ed Jost has agreed to be Junior Warden and Vincent Mills has joined the Vestry as the much needed final member. As of now we are fully staffed.

I will report more on this later but the Vestry is working on several things. Among the more important of these is a renegotiation of our mortgage that should result in a much more favorable set of terms and conditions that will be very helpful in these difficult economic times and a review and update of our church liability insurance.

In Memoriam

Michael Lazare

It is with great sadness that we report the sudden death of parishioner Mike Lazare. He died Sunday night, September 11th. Michael loved his parish family and gave of himself to God and His Church in numerous ways. Father Hines said, "Our parish family has really been shaken by his death. It does remind us to give each day to Our Lord, for we never know when He will call us Home." Michael was warden of the acolytes and was instrumental in forging a new standard of excellence for the men and boys who serve at God's altar. Michael's requiem will be celebrated at St. George's on Saturday, September 24th. Michael's family has been moved by the outpouring of love and support from the parish family. The parish thanks St. Anne's ACW guild for agreeing to host the reception after the Mass. Please continue to pray for Michael's family, as they mourn his loss.

Ivy Grignon

Parishioner June Johnson's beloved mother, Ivy Grignon, died on August 19th. She was a 102 years of age. Ivy was born and grew up in Jamaica. She was a nurse for many years and passed that love of nursing onto her daughter, June. Fr. Hines said of Ivy, "She was very devout in her Christian faith. Every time I would visit her she would offer praises to our Lord Jesus. She was a delight to be around and would beam with joy when in the presence of children." June and family, friends and parishioners, will greatly miss her. We offer thanks to God for her long, healthy life, a life given in service to others. May she rest in peace.
