BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR FEBRUARY 2, 2014

CANDLEMAS

The Purification of Saint Mary the Virgin, also known as The Presentation of Christ in the Temple, is an ancient festival dating back to 350 A.D.  This festival on February 2 celebrates when the Blessed Virgin Mary took her child to the Temple at about six weeks old to present him at the Temple and would complete the ceremonies of Purification.  There the prophetess Anna and aged Simeon recognized that this child was the special one.  The story of St. Simeon’s recognition of the Lord continues the pattern of manifestation.  It is indeed Christ presented to His own people in the form laid down by the Jewish law.  The English name Candlemas refers to the custom of blessing and distributing candles and carrying them in procession before the Mass.  The symbolism of the candles is clear and direct.  They are blessed, distributed to the congregation and lit while the Nunc Dimittis is sung and are then carried round the church in procession to commemorate the entry of the ‘True Light’ into the world and the gradual illumination of the whole world by Him.                                                                                     Excerpt from:  The Christian Calendar
