INSTRUCTION ON THE FAITH: Is the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament on the Alter truly His Body and Blood?

BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS, A DISCUSSION GROUP, LEAD BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
This discussion group meets each Sunday, 9:15 am – 10:15 am in the Nursery with Ann Whitfield as facilitator. Please bring a Bible (any version) and perhaps a notebook in order to keep track of what the Spirit is saying. Also please bring a folding chair from one of the other classrooms. Men and women are invited. Just come when you are able.

STEWARDSHIP IN-GATHERING, NEXT SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13
We ask that you pray diligently and listen with an open heart so as to discern the financial amount as well as time and talent God is asking you to give for the support of St. George’s for 2017. It is through these offerings that we are able to fulfill God’s commandment: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” Matt. 28:19-20

HOLIDAY BAKE SALE COMING SOON – NOVEMBER 20TH
It is time to make preparations for donations to the Holiday Bake Sale. Some of you are already preparing items for the freezer. The Bake Sale is only two weeks away! We hope everyone is planning to donate homemade goodies.

ACOLYTE TRAINING RESUMES
Acolyte training continues today between 8:00 and 10:30 services. All parishioners are welcome to attend the training to better understand why we do the things we do.

RED WAGON PANTRY – NOVEMBER IS THANKSGIVING MONTH!
If anyone knows of someone in need of food, please speak to Fr. Hines so the food pantry can assist. For November, the Red Wagon is accepting Food Gift Certificates from any grocery store or cash donations as well as any food donations.

DISCUSSION GROUP CONCLUDES NEXT WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2
Discussion on The Elements of the Spiritual Life concludes this week with Chapter 6, on the Gifts of the Spirit: Holy Fear, Godliness, Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, and Ghostly Strength. As we’ve read this book, we’ve been stirred to desire more of God’s will in the way we live our lives. Thank you to those who have participated, as we all learn from one another.

St. George’s parish will observe the Feast of All Saints Day on Tuesday, November 1st at 5:45 pm and All Souls Day on Wednesday at 5:45 pm. Please provide the names of those deceased you would like to be prayed for on All Souls Day. Each name from the list will be prayed for by Fr. Hines and the congregation at the Mass for All Souls Day.

TODAY’S INSTRUCTION ON THE FAITH: Why all the fancy robes?

BANNS OF MARRIAGE:
I, Fr. Gordon Hines, publish the Banns of Marriage between myself, Gordon William Hines, of Las Vegas, and Carmela Jo Baker of Las Vegas. If any of you know cause, or just impediment, why these two persons should not be joined together in holy Matrimony, you are to declare it. This is the second time of asking.

Father Hines & Carmela will be married by Bishop Donald Ashman on Saturday, October 1st at 11:00 am at Church of Our Saviour and Holy Apostles in Los Angeles. All friends and parishioners of St. George’s are welcome to attend.

FR. JOHN LESCALLETT TO VISIT ST GEORGE’S OCT 1ST & 2ND
Fr. John LesCallett will visit St. George’s parish to cover Fr. Hines’ absence on Oct. 1st & 2nd, as Fr. Hines and Carmela will be receiving the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Fr. LesCallett of the Church of the Atonement, Fountain Hills, AZ, will officiate at the annual parish family Blessing of the Animals service in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis. On Sunday, the following day, he will celebrate at both Masses and speak on the topic of stewardship, launching the parish’s annual stewardship campaign.

We need both young men and adults to strengthen the current core of acolytes that serve St. George’s on Sundays and Wednesdays. All novices need to be confirmed before actually serving at the altar. The training consists of approximately 6-8 weeks of study followed by 3 months of hands-on and 2-3 months of assisting at the altar under the tutelage of the acolyte trainer (Rick Cummings) or acolyte warden (John Pelham). All parishioners are welcome to attend the first part of the training to better understand why we do the things we do. Y’all come.

DISCUSSION GROUP
Next Wednesday, 9/21/16, a group discussion will continue on the book: The Elements of the Spiritual Life by Anglican author Frederic Harton. It is an inspiring handbook on the Christian life, guiding the reader to a deepened faith and practice; “For growth beyond formal religion, one must get right ideas about God and must know how He may be known and approached, loved and adored. Our strongest motive in pressing forward must be desire for God Himself, and secondary only to this a humble longing to promote His glory and serve His kingdom.” Books are available at $10. Sign-up sheet is located on the patio. The discussions are led by Kathy Ruud and Fr. Hines.

STEWARDSHIP: THE BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 10:00 AM TO 2:00 PM
This is a Congregational Stewardship Event. Everyone should take an active role for we are all Stewards of God’s bounty. There are sign-up papers on the Stewardship Table on the patio suggesting many ministries available. New and different flyers are on the table. These are for advertising only. Everyone take as many as you think you can distribute. Suggestions of places to place them are also on the Stewardship Patio Table. Our youth and their friends are encouraged to participate also. With God’s help let’s make this St. Francis Day Celebration the most joyful and rewarding experience in town. It will take everyone to prayerfully commit to God’s call for you. Thank you.

FATHER HINES ON VACATION AUGUST 25 THROUGH 29. WE WILL CELEBRATE MORNING PRAYER TODAY. THERE WILL BE EVENING PRAYER AND MASS NEXT WEDNESDAY 31.

Father will be in the office next Tuesday, August 30. Until then, if you have an emergency please, call Dale Foust, Sr. Warden at 702-361-6218.

THE PSALMS ARE SUNG ANTIPHONALLY
During the Service of Morning Prayer, we recite the Psalms antiphonally: Psalm 19 (pages 363-364) and Psalm 24 (pages 365-369). The first verse of each Psalm is recited by those on the Gospel (east) side of the church. The second verse is recited by those on the Epistle (west) side of the church and continue thoughout the Psalm.

At this time, we need help distributing Invitations and Contracts to Vendors who represent animals. The Invitations and Contracts are located on the patio. Please take a few copies of the contracts and invitations to your veterinarian; pet groomers; trainers, pet boutiques; SPCA resources or any others you may think of. For further information, please speak with Ann Whitfield or Fr. Hines.

SUMMER MOVIE NIGHT: NEXT SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 AT 6:30 PM
We have another exciting movie coming on Saturday, August 13. The move is entitled: Old Fashioned. Sound boring? Hardly!!! It is about a young man, named Clay Walsh, who leaves his wild-side days behind by moving to a small town to settle down to live a Christian way of life. However, before you know it, his Christian world view is challenged when he meets Amber Hewson who has a completely different take on life. His Christian faith about love and marriage are tested. How will this story end? Come and see!!! You won’t be disappointed!!! (Film is not recommended for children under 16 yrs.)

SUMMER MOVIE NIGHT
We have another exciting movie coming on Saturday, August 13. The move is entitled: Old Fashioned. Sound boring? Hardly!!! It is about a young man, named Clay Walsh, who leaves his wild-side days behind by moving to a small town to settle down to live a Christian way of life. However, before you know it, his Christian world view is challenged when he meets Amber Hewson who has a completely different take on life. His Christian faith about love and marriage are tested. How will this story end? Come and see!!! You won’t be disappointed!!!

CHRISTIAN CLASSICS – BOOK DISCUSSION: MERE CHRISTIANITY BY C. S. LEWIS
The Mere Christianity discussion group will take the month of August off. The group hopes to finish Book 4 in the near future.

TODAY’S INSTRUCTION ON THE FAITH:  What does ‘Propitiation’ mean?  In Greek the word “propitiation” means “atoning sacrifice.”  Okay, but what does “atoning sacrifice” mean? During today’s announcements, Fr. Hines will attempt a new feat of condensing a four hour theological explanation on the meaning of “atoning sacrifice” in one minute.

THE HEEREMA FAMILY’S LAST SUNDAY AT ST. GEORGE’S IS TODAY
We wish God’s continued blessings on the Heerema family as God leads them on their next exciting calling to San Antonio, Texas.  The Heerema family has been a tremendous blessing to all of us in so many ways with their many labors in various ministries of St. George’s but chiefly we are grateful for the friendships we made with them.  Bret, Becky, Austin, Jeneke, Jolie, Asher: you will be deeply missed!!!!  We are grateful to God for your time with us and we shall keep up our prayers for all of you as you sacrifice in so many ways service to our country through the armed forces.  Please join us for cake on the patio after 10:30 am Mass to wish them well.
