Ash WednesdayFebruary 13
Noon: Ashes, Stations of the Cross & Litany
6:30: Ashes, Litany & Mass

February 13th is Ash Wednesday, and I pray we all begin the holy season of Lent on the right spiritual footing. To help us toward that end St. George’s will be offering two services that day.  At noon there shall be the imposition of ashes along with the recitation of the Litany and Stations of the Cross. At 6:30 pm there will be the imposition of ashes, a sung Litany and Mass.

The origins of Lent go back to at least the early second century. Fasts and other ascetical disciplines were required of those seeking Baptism and Confirmation on Easter Even. By the fourth century the pre-Easter fast was extended to a forty day period. Around the eighth century the season of Lent took on an increasingly penitential tone.

Lent is a wonderful season for us Catholic Christians when the distractions of everyday life can be more readily pruned back, allowing time for deeper reflection on Our Lord and His sufferings for us.  Prayer, fasting and the other disciplines of the Church offer us the surest path to a deeper communion with Almighty God.

I look forward to sharing with you the rigors of this penitential season and proclaiming the Risen Christ on Easter Day.

In Christ,

Fr. Hines +
