CANDLEMAS

February 2nd, is the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, sometimes called the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Candlemas.

This feast is one of the most ancient in the Church dating to the early 4th century and the emergence of Christianity from persecution. It has been the custom in many branches of the Church to bless and distribute candles to the congregation which are lighted and held during the Gospel and the Prayer of Consecration.

Why, you might ask? The lighted candles, like the Christmas Star or the Christ Candle, symbolize the coming of Our Saviour who in his royal majesty disperses the darkness of sin and death. So I invite all the parish family to make a special effort to come and share in this special service which traditionally ends the Christmas Season.
